Choosing your foundation shade

The right shade disappears into your skin. Here is how to test it, and what to do between shades.

3 minute read

Most people choose a foundation that is too light or too grey. The right shade matches your neck and jaw, not your hand, and looks like skin in daylight.

How to test a shade

  • Choose two or three shades close to your skin.
  • Put a small stripe of each along your jaw, from the cheek down to the neck.
  • Look in daylight near a window. The shade that disappears is yours.
  • Check the undertone: if your skin looks warmer or redder than the stripe, try a warmer shade.

Between two shades

  • Choose the darker one for the face, and blend it down the neck.
  • In harmattan many people go a little lighter or ashier. Moisturise first and the shade will look right again.
  • Set it lightly with powder in hot weather so it lasts.

This is general advice, not medical advice.
