Caring for natural hair in dry weather

Natural hair loses moisture fast in harmattan. Gentle washing and sealing in water keep it soft.

3 minute read

Natural hair is drier than it looks, because the oil from the scalp travels slowly down each coil. Dry air and dust make it worse, and dry hair breaks.

What helps

  • Wash with a gentle shampoo every one to two weeks, and condition every time.
  • Detangle while the conditioner is in, starting from the ends and working up.
  • Put on a leave-in cream while the hair is still damp, then a little oil to seal the water in.
  • Sleep on a satin pillowcase or in a satin scarf, so the hair does not rub dry at night.
  • Give your edges a rest from tight styles and heavy extensions now and then.

When to get advice

If your scalp is sore, very itchy or flaking a lot, or hair is falling out in patches, see a doctor or a pharmacist.

This is general advice, not medical advice.
